Dancing for the New Year in Coconut Grove, Florida
When so many people in the U.S. celebrate the New Year by staying indoors, those living in South Florida get outside and enjoy the beautiful winter weather. Every year those in Coconut Grove, just outside of Miami, have fun in the King Mango Strut. It’s a parade put on by locals that celebrate whatever message they want to send out. Most of the floats are colorful and tropical, fitting with the flora and fauna of the local area.
This woman was dancing with a group of others and accompanying the bongo players in the truck. When I made this image, she had broken away a bit from the group and was turning and dancing by herself. The rainbow-colored scarves on her fans twisted and turned with her. It was a beautiful sight, and such a truly South Florida way to celebrate the New Year.
