Poetry In A Window in Trapani, Italy
Sometimes life can have a way of throwing you some nasty breaks. But if you slow down enough to ponder what is going on, you can find the silver lining in your situation. I had been having a particularly rough time in my professional and personal life, so I decided to give it all a hard stop for three weeks and travel a route that I had taken nearly twenty years earlier when life was much simpler.
This is how I found myself with my camera looking for lines and chasing the light just before the golden hour in Trapani, Italy, a small town in northwestern Sicily. Now much older than the first time that I had come here, I was mesmerized by the historic buildings whose bones were solid, but whose exterior looked tattered from decades of sun, wind, and sea salt. I was captivated with how the light hit the buildings and the people in downtown Trapani as the sun set. I fell in love with the details that the local people gave to their homes.
This window portrays such an attention to detail. The thin white curtain to let in light but blocked some of the breeze. The thicker outer curtain, pulled back, has stripes that correspond with the weathered markings on the building. The frayed bottom, the small balcony, the pop of color from the neighbor’s house. This all came as such a delight and worked to take me away from my hurried life, and reminded me that if you let it, life will show you the poetry in simple things, like a window in a small town in Sicily.
