Waves Crashing in Positano, Italy
The small town of Positano has a reputation that can stand on its own. This beautiful cliffside town in southern Italy, with architecture dating back to the 13th century, has been featured in the works of artists as diverse as John Steinbeck, The Rolling Stones, and Wilhelm Kempff.
After making photos of the beachgoers, the cliffside dwellings, and the seagulls, I looked to my left. Off in the distance, I saw a magnificent scene of waves repeatedly crashing on the cliffs. As can be seen in this photo, it was a foggy day, and the wind was blowing up from the southwest. So, I had to bear my head down and push against the wind, only to have my hat blow off, making me chase after it as it skipped along the beach.
Once I got to the rocky part of the beach where these cliffs started, I had to watch my step as I trekked across a small wooden bridge that spanned a gap in the rocks. I walked to the edge of a small cliff and watched these waves crashing onto the rocks. I set my trusty Nikon on continuous release mode, placed the viewfinder to my eye, my finger on the shutter release, and waited for the right moment. Then just when the waves were the most dramatic and the water sprayed into the air, click click click click.
In 1953, John Steinbeck wrote about Positano in a Harper’s Bazaar article, “It is a dream place that isn’t quite real when you are there and becomes beckoningly real after you have gone.” Now, from the other side of the Atlantic, these Positano waves are calling.
