Small towns in Italy can be so charming. Part of that charm is the rich Italian history and part of it is that you don’t know what you’ll find around the next corner. My pride in my Italian heritage has led me to spending a lot of time in Italy and to reading up about the culture.

I have found that Italian culture as a whole takes a lot of pride in its history and its art. After all, this is where the Renaissance started. This is where opera comes from. This is where the word “bello” is used seemingly used more often than the word “beautiful” is used in English. (Walk un bel po’ means to walk quite a ways, and fare la bella figura means to make a good impression.)

In this photo, I was making my way through the winding streets of central Agrigento, which was not as well kept up as I wished for the city. Then I turned the corner, and all I could think was “che bello”. This façade was so well taken care of that it made me want to know who lived here. This photo doesn’t show what else is around this doorway, so just keep this image in mind and think of how charming and bello Italy can be.
