Which Way in Trapani, Italy
Downtown Trapani is a bustling place in the evening, which may seem like it doesn’t match the slow pace of life compared to Italy’s larger cities. But among the young Trapanesi taking an evening stroll, the elders catching up with friends, and the tourists trying to find their way, the first photo is an image that stands apart from what was going on around the scene.
An elder man stands just beyond the shadow in front of a brightly colored building with Mediterranean shutters. He and his dog both pause for a few seconds to decide which way to walk next. This is when I captured the image. In my shot you can see the signs for “gelato” and “trattoria” just behind a pile of rubbish. It is both a foreign and familiar scene of a place that I’ve visited a couple times, and has charmed me repeatedly.
I have included the second photo, because it shows a bit more of the busy scene around us. Cars were continuously in my frame, so that is why you see this one present. The man has now decided which way to go and he’s pulling the dog in that direction. This makes me think of how loyal and patient are canine companions are. It’s a scene that can possibly speak to more people, since the human and dog connection spans cultures around the world.
