According to a recent study by Freshbooks, 33% of Americans work for themselves.

This means that more people are facing the challenge of entering the gig economy as a freelancer or branding themselves as a solopreneur.

One of the first questions that any business owner faces is what name to use.

The answer to this question can be rather complicated. In my research for this post, I found the clearest explanation addressed what not to do when naming your business.

The good news is this post looks at clearly delineated pros and cons of naming a business when you work for yourself, or using your own name and operate under your own personal brand.

When To Use Your Name for Your Brand

(1) When there isn’t competition for a URL

Your brand name should be the same as the ULR of your website.

If you have a very common name like is Sara Smith or Jose Gomez, then this will not be your best option.

But if your name is not extremely common, then the URL will probably be something that you can secure.

(2) When you’ll be the only one providing the services
